Tolerance, compassion, and forgiveness are explored in this film, as the two protagonists – an army captain and a lieutenant – are sent to Moscow from a remote army base to find and retrieve two deserters. The Captain, numbed by the death of his daughter, trusts nobody. During the 24 hours that they spend in Moscow, they become entangled in a series of adventures – some funny, most dramatic. One of the deserters chooses suicide over a return to the regiment. The other, an easy-going and kind young indigenous Evenk man, gradually changes the Captain’s harsh attitude towards life.
